Prescription pills are regulated because they are more potent than over the counter drugs. On the other hand because they are stronger, they have more chance to cause a patient harm. You may think that prescription weight loss pills are better than over the counter ones because they are stronger. But are they the best option for you?

What is your BMI?

Being Overweight is such a broad term. There is a prescribed weight range based on a person's height. If you exceed the range prescribed for your height, you are overweight. But to fully understand by how much you exceeded your ideal weight you need to know your BMI.

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. To get your BMI, divide your weight by your height and multiply by 705. Either that or go online and use the online BMI calculator. A BMI of 30 and above is the obese range. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

Prescription weight loss pills are prescribed to individuals with a BMI range of 27 and above.

Why would you need prescription weight loss pills?

Being overweight can have serious health complications. If your BMI falls in the range of 27 and above, you are at greater risk for a number of diseases. These include heart disease, diabetes and hypertension.

Weight loss pills are prescribed to help obese individuals regain a healthy weight level. By keeping their weight within acceptable levels, they minimize their risk of contracting any of these diseases.

The only long term weight loss pills approved by the FDA

Long term use of diet pills is largely unexplored territory. As of today are only 2 weight loss supplements given the nod by the FDA for long term weight maintenance. These are Xenical and Meridia.

The active component of Xenical is Orlistat. Orlistat blocks the fat and prevents it from being absorbed by the body. The blocked fat is excreted by the body.

The active ingredient of Meridia is Sibutramine, an appetite suppressant. Sibutramine tricks the brain into believing the person is full.

The downside of prescription weight loss pills

The side effect of taking Xenical is frequent trips to the bathroom. These range from oily excretions to diarrhea. Xenical is known to cause gas, dehydration and bloating. Some may also have an allergic reaction to Orlistat.

Meridia, as an appetite suppressant, has graver side effects. These side effects include elevated blood pressure, insomnia, constant thirst, and even constipation.
